Spirit in the Water

We were assigned to create a graphic identity for a new Hard Seltzer type drink, Nålla Kova Sooda. We started the design by analyzing the drink. Hard seltzers are made with sparkling water, alcohol, and just a little bit of natural flavour. There are no additives such as sugar, artificial sweeteners, or colours. Pretty quickly it became obvious to us that the drink itself or the way it was made presented no identity to create a graphic one out of. It is basically water – not a richly colored, and scented spirit aged in oak!

By analyzing the existing hard seltzer –type drinks on the market, we made the remark that pretty much all of them tried to derive their graphics from the hint of taste added to the sparkling water. This resulted in colourful and lush presentations more commonly seen on drinks like ciders, beers or canned cocktails. We decided to do the opposite. What is the graphic identity of water?

This resulted in a very minimalistic, yet multidimensional look. There are both 2- and 3-dimensional elements floating in white empty space. Together they make a fascinating composition in which emptiness and apparent transparency are the main components. The horizon on the bottom end of the can gives the design its weight and depth, making the graphics above float in undefined space.

We love to inspire people to be creative and express themselves through architecture and design. The empty design encourages people to modify and play with the design, pick
up a marker, brush or a bunch of stickers, and have fun. Fill in the identity vacuum with an expression of their own colourful and lively spirit!
